Halting the Progression to Diabetes

The CDC reports that approximately 88 million American adults—more than 1 in 3—have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 84% don’t know they have it. Those with prediabetes are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetesheart disease, and stroke.

The good news is that the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program can help those with prediabetes make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a partnership of public and private organizations working together to build a nationwide delivery system for a lifestyle change program proven to prevent or delay onset of type 2 diabetes in adults with prediabetes.
 

Four Key Pillars

The National DPP provides a framework for type 2 diabetes prevention efforts in the U.S. founded on four key pillars:
  1. A trained workforce of lifestyle coaches
  2. National quality standards supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program
  3. A network of program delivery organizations sustained through coverage
  4. Participant uptake and referral

These pillars link closely to the CDC's strategic goals for the National DPP: increase the supply of quality programs; increase demand for the program among people at risk; increase referrals from healthcare providers; and increase coverage among public and private payers.
 

CDC-Recognized Diabetes Prevention Program in Delaware

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles while reducing their chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

The YMCA program is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, a person with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58%.

In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help participants change their lifestyle by encouraging healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior modifications over the course of 25 one-hour sessions. Topics covered include nutrition, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. After the initial 16 core sessions, participants will meet for three sessions every other week, and then monthly for up to a year for added support to help participants maintain progress. Program goals include reducing YMCA-DPP-Video_WEB.pngbody weight by 7% and gradually increasing physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week.
